Hypothyroidism is an under active state agency for lack of effects of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4).

The frequency of this disease rises with age, being most prevalent in the elderly and in women.

The most common cause is the surgical removal of the thyroid or its suppression by radioactive iodine treatment in cases of hyperthyroidism with it.

Other causes are:

  • Idiopathic primary hypothyroidism: blood because antibodies directed against the thyroid gland may be associated with other autoimmune processes cause (antibodies against various tissues of the body itself).
  • Lack of the thyroid gland, which can not be synthesized hormones.
  • Chronic use of certain drugs, such as amiodarone, iodine and lithium.

To know if an immune disorder is a study of antithyroid antibodies.

Ultrasonography of the thyroid gland and thyroid scintigraphy are useful in assessing thyroid size and see their features, may indicate the origin of hipotirodismo.

Hypothyroidism Treatment

Treatment includes the replacement of the lack of thyroid hormones. This treatment involves administering levothyroxine. It should be very strict in terms of the dose to be taken, to avoid excess thyroid hormone blood as may fall in hyperthyroidism.
