Hyperthyroidism is a hypermetabolic state caused by increased production of thyroid hormones, T4 and T3.
The frequency of this disorder in the general population is approximately 1%, being more prevalent in females.
The most common causes are multinodular goiter, the thyroid gland tumor that produces thyroid hormones, Graves disease and take more pills dose in hypothyroidism. Less common causes are inflammatory processes and cancer thyroid follicular type of thyroid gland.
Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in middle-aged adults, especially in women. It is a disease due to antibodies that stimulate the TSH receptor.
Multinodular goiter is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in the elderly, presenting a more latent way as the previous frame and less symptomatic.
Moreover, in other cases this pathology may be secondary to prolonged treatment with a drug called amiodarone, or the presence of a thyroid hormone-producing cancer or thyroid stimulating hormone.
Manifestations of hyperthyroidism indicate that there is involvement of many systems in our body.
The suspicion of hyperthyroidism based on symptoms of hyperactivity of different body systems will continue to have a blood test to determine thyroid hormones, T3, T4 and TSH. The hormonal alterations characteristic of hyperthyroidism is a decrease of TSH and elevated T3 and T4.
It is also important to perform a study to confirm whether there are immune thyroid antibodies cause the box.
The thyroid scan and thyroid ultrasound help to know the size of the thyroid and see their features, orienting toward a particular cause of hyperthyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism Graves’s disease is treated by decreasing the synthesis of thyroid hormones, antithyroid drugs managing or reducing the amount of thyroid tissue by treatment with radioactive iodine or surgery of the thyroid gland. Antithyroid drugs are the metamizol and carbimazole.
There are other drugs as symptomatic treatment. Are drugs called beta blockers such as propranolol.
Surgery is another therapeutic alternative, especially if there is no response to prior actions or if the growth of the gland compresses any adjacent structures such as the airway.
Preventive measures should be applied in people taking medication for hypothyroidism and heart, particularly amiodarone.
