Principles of Ayurveda

One of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda is that the universe is the macrocosm and man is the microcosm. Everything in the macrocosm (universe) is in the microcosm (man).

The basic constituents that exist in the universe – man are five elements: Ether (Akash), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), Water (Jala or Apa) Earth (Prithvi).
These five elements are represented in our body through of the three biological humors or doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These three doshas act both physically, mentally.

  • VATA means “moving things”. The air and ether are represented in the body as Vata. He is responsible for muscle movements, heart beat, the expansion and contraction of the lungs, the movements of the stomach and intestines. Motor movements and sensory nerve impulses and all movements of the nervous system.
  • PITA means “digesting things.” Fire and water are represented in the body as Pita. Is metabolism.Digestive system works, the gray matter of the brain cells (manifested as intelligence). The fire activated the retina that senses light.
  • Kapha means “the joining or holding things.” Land and water are represented in the body as Kapha. The water manifests itself in the secretion of gastric juices, mucous membranes, plasma, cytoplasm, etc.. The earth is manifested in the bones, muscles, tendons, skin, hair and all solid structures.

It is very important that the five elements are in balance. Excess ether can cause osteoporosis or a decrease of this element may cause hypertrophy. Excess air can tachycardia and decreased produce paralysis eg.Excessive heat can cause fever, for example, or a decrease of fire can cause anemia. Excess water may cause edema, pleural and reduced dehydration this element. Excess land can produce tumors, obesity and decrease deformities.
